David Brings a Biblical Classic to the Big Screen
David is a lively, family-oriented animated musical adventure that delights both children and adults, offering biblical lessons suitable for all ages. The historical story depicts the ongoing battle between good and evil, obedience and disobedience, through the life of David, the shepherd boy who became Israel’s greatest king. His care and dedication are clear early on when the young, kind shepherd protects a ewe about to give birth, along with the rest of his flock, from a stalking lion. High-quality 3D animation characters representing various personality types and traits are introduced throughout the film, produced by Sunrise Animation Studios and distributed by Angel Studios.
Colorful threads weave his story into the fabric of history. He begins as a young shepherd boy at home, enjoying his mother’s support, his father’s guidance, and the companionship of siblings, friends, and neighbors. Key moments in the life of the “sweet psalmist of Israel” are highlighted, from his anointing as king by Samuel while he was still a shepherd to his famous victory over Goliath. It also covers his efforts to win the jealous King Saul’s favor and his eventual rise as Saul’s successor. The musician in the king’s court who soothed Saul’s dark moods was an unlikely hero against a seemingly unbeatable foe. It is the biography of the standard-bearer for Israel’s kings, in the messianic lineage, that has been retold for thousands of years and will continue to be passed down through generations. He demonstrated his deep trust in Heshem with a single stone from a slingshot, silencing G-d’s enemy.
Goliath’s intriguing character surprises with his appearance, much like the effeminate Philistine ruler who pranced around on his amusing pony. In the central battle scene, the giant’s disdainful attitude toward David and Israel’s G-d is thought-provoking. He isn’t the only one in history or in the story to have challenged the one true G-d. King Saul, who crossed boundaries, was still wearing the breastplate of the priesthood—a clear violation of the roles of priest and king. Willfully breaking boundaries set by Hashem is rebellion against all that is good. Though Saul seemed impressive outwardly, David was truly admirable inwardly because he had a heart for G-d, whereas Saul did not. Anything less than genuine love for Hashem falls short of His standard. The scenes with marauders hidden in shadowy cloaks, using sticks and branches to make themselves and their camels appear larger and more intimidating, are captivating. Strange behaviors characterize the lives of those who live without regard for Elohim, and this compelling portrayal of a lawless group highlights the ongoing battle of good versus evil.
Retelling David’s life story offers educational entertainment that enriches the learning experience by highlighting knowing, believing, and living according to biblical principles. He was a “Man After God’s Own Heart” (1 Samuel 13:14). Someone with a willing heart, rather than pride, readily obeys, confesses, and repents for their mistakes, accepting the consequences of their actions without resistance.
